Simon worked at a pizzeria on Merritt Island, Florida, delivering pizzas - a job he quite enjoyed, as it gave him the chance to whizz round the streets at high speed, visiting houses, meeting people, making friends. He liked to meet people and make them smile and make them happy. He liked to do this for people because he wasn't one - a person. Simon was a robot. Whether by good programming or by a freak of 'un-nature', Simon projected a happy image, which people picked up on and reflected back. They loved Simon. They loved they way he waved at them as he passed them in the street. They loved his cheery whistle as he rolled up the garden path, and his distinctive tap on the front door. “Hi, Mrs Sanches,” he'd say, “lovely weather we are having today. My! your scaevola are looking almost as beautiful as you do.” And Nora Sanches would blush and giggle, and open up her purse. “One ten inch thin crust pepperoni with a side order of coleslaw and French fries.
